Mt. Kipipiri Hike is an exciting start to mountaineering as most other Aberdare hikes. It is a perfect trail for hikers looking for a challenge, starting at the **Geta Forest Station** near Getabush, up to the `Mt. Kipipiri summit (3,363m ASL)`, and then down a steep `4.5-km stretch`.

The hike starts at a well-paved dirt road before detouring into a graciously endowed rainforest with wildlife and panoramic treats of the **Nyandarua Range, Lake Naivasha, and Lake Olboloosat.** Hikers should be ready for a `13-km walk` to **Mt. Kipipiri summit**, which certainly demands resolve. However, the beautiful fauna and flora, and enthralling forest scents make it worth it.

Experience this 24.3-km out-and-back trail near Gathara, Nyandarua. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 8 h 49 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.

**Mt Kinangop is the second-highest peak in the Aberdares**. On a clear day, you can see nearby Elephant hill, and possibly as far as Mt. Longonot and Lake Naivasha. Like most other trails in the Aberdares, the trail ascends through the various vegetation zones, including forest, bamboo, montane humid forest and the moorland zone of the Aberdares plateau.

##### North Kinangop Forest

The trail starts at the North Kinangop Forest Station at Mutarakwa. From here, the `first 2 km (1.3miles)` run through relatively flat forest and farmland, before one enters the protected forest through a gate on your righthand side. The next `6km (3.5 mile)` ascends up the central **Aberdares ridge**, through the various vegetation zones.

##### Aberdare Ridge

This part of the trail can be `muddy` _(especially after rains)_ and is also the habitat of `occasional buffalos and elephants`, whose footprints or droppings may be encountered along the trail. In parts, the trail can be a bit overgrown, but there are trailblazers to guide your way. Once on the Aberdare ridge, the trail turns South for another `6km (3.5 mile)`, ascending gently towards **Kinangop peak**. The final ascent of the peak is steep and can be done through the grassy western approach, or the rocky southern approach. It is possible to traverse onwards to Elephant hill.

**Mount Kenya** is protected by Mount Kenya national park, the mountain is situated approximately `200 kilometers (125 miles)` northeast of Nairobi and getting to the mountain you have to fly to Kenya through **Nairobi** using Jomo Kenyatta international airport (NBO).

##### Summits of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya comprises of 3 peaks that are

- Batian
- Nelion
- Point Lenana
 standing at different elevation.

 **Batian** is main summit and the highest peak of Mount Kenya rising to `5,199
 meters (17,057 feet) in elevation`, Batian peak is the usually climbed by advanced
 rock climbing and mountaineering enthusiasts.

Batian peak is climbed using the `north face` route which is at its **best from July to September** and another option is `southwest ridge rout`e which is slightly easier and it is best used from **December to March.**

**Nelion peak** is a smaller twin peak of Batian peak rising to `5,188 meters (17,021 feet)` in altitude, climbing peak Nelion is **quiet challenging** and it includes climbing through multi-pitch rocks to reach the peak.

**Point Lenana** is the 3rd peak of Mount Kenya rising to `4,985 meters (16,354 feet)` in elevation, climbing to this peak **requires no technical skills** of climbing that is why it is the `popular Peak` climbed by most climbers on Mount Kenya.

There are a number of routes used to get to reach Point Lenana, _ascending to Point Lenana is quiet challenging_ that is why you are required to have physical fitness as a climber.

### Routes

**1.-> Sirimon route** is a route of a **minimum of 2 days** climb offering a climber a stunning approach to the final peak of Mount Kenya, this route is one of the most popular climbing routes used to reach the summit of Kenya. When climbing Mount Kenya using Sirimon route it is wisely advised to add an extra day to your climbing safari to adjust to the altitude.

Sirimon route consists of two camps that are **Old Moses** at `3,300 meters (10,800 feet)` and **Shipton’s camp** `4,200 meters (13,800 feet)` to stay at while climbing the volcano.

**2.->Burguret route** is `challenging route` used to climbing Mount Kenya, this route rarely used and it is best fit for climbers who need climb alone. Burguret route runs through tropical rainforest at its starting point, wild vegetation and it is very muddy.

Climbing Mount Kenya using Burguret route takes a minimum of **3 nights** and to reach the majestic peak of the mountain and it can be combined with other routes/trails.

**3.-> Naro Moru route** is the `shortest climbing route` used when climbing Mount Kenya, this route is also the `most direct and popular routes` and because of its shortness the route is very busy. Naro Moru route is the best route to use when climbing Mount Kenya because it is relatively quick and easy, offers `spectacular views` of colorful plant life and one of the best sites to encounter during the climb on this route is the Vertical Bog which is sometimes waterlogged.

Climbing Naro Moru route can be done in one day but **2 days and one night are better.**

**4.-> Chogoria route** is an awesome route to use when climbing Mount Kenya and a `best option` to use when ascending and descending the volcano, this route offers spectacular scenery including `views of waterfalls and amazing gorge.`

Climbing Mount Kenya using Chogoria route takes **6 days including 3 days** for descending.

**5.-> Timau route** is an older route/track on Mount Kenya but currently the route is not used as much, Timau is `not one of the best routes` to use when climbing Mount Kenya as it has no place to stay overnight.

**South Ridge route to Nelion** leads to Nelion peak which is next to the highest peak of Mount Kenya and offers breathtaking views as it takes climbers along the south face of the mountain

Climbing Mount Kenya using South Ridge route to Nelion takes `8 hours` of climbing around `18 patches` and `3 hours` of descending _(2 days and 1 night)_.

**6.-> North face route to Batian** is an `excellent route for climbers` approaching Batian peak from Nelion reached via a climb on the north face of the mountain,

This is the **most challenging route** while climbing Mount Kenya and it is mostly used by **advanced climber**, climbing Mount Kenya using this route takes around `12 hours` to ascend and `5 hours to descending` **(2 days and 1 night).**

#### Elephant Hill — The Ultimate Hiking Destination

Located about 100km from Nairobi CBD, Elephant Hill is dubbed “the ultimate hiking destination” — and rightfully so. The “hill” presents the perfect challenge to the novice hiker looking to conquer a tougher terrain and acclimatize to higher altitudes. The 9km Elephant Hill hike trail starts at the Njabini Forest Station gate, at an elevation of `8,202ft (2,500m)` above sea level and ends at the summit, at an elevation of `12,000ft (3,658m)` above sea level. The entire hike up and down takes 7-10 hours, hiking at a moderate pace.

The first 3km stretch features a moderately paved path, cutting through a planted forest, with the occasional flock of sheep and a few cattle revealing evidence of human encroachment. At the end of this path is the official starting point at an **elevation of ** `9,192ft (2,802m)` above sea level.

#### Bamboo Gate

A further 1.5km trek on the Elephant Hill Hike gives way to the **Bamboo Gate** `(9,622ft/2,933m` above sea level), welcoming you into the narrow, muddy trail of the bamboo zone. The towering bamboo canopy ensures the trail remains annoyingly wet, slippery, and poorly lit. It is important to be adequately prepared for slips and falls, so wearing a comfortable, waterproof, well-treaded hiking boot is a good idea.
The occasional mound of elephant dung and fresh footprints constantly remind you that you are walking through a wildlife zone. No need to worry though wild animals naturally keep off the trail, and anyway, you will always be accompanied by an armed guard.

### The never-ending bamboo forest

The bamboo zone suddenly gives way to the lush moorland at an elevation of `10,679ft (3,255m) above sea level`. Most hikers give up at this point, hence its uncanny name — A Point of Despair. The trail becomes tougher and tougher as you transition from the moorland to the rocky zone, which features scattered shrubs and giant lobelia. Caution is advised while trudging through this terrain, as even a minor fall could cause serious injuries.

### The Summit

The Elephant Hill summit stands tall and mighty ahead of you when you get to The Tail `(11,526ft/3,513m above sea level)`. The rest of the trail to the summit is extremely steep — and equally satisfying when you conquer it. With good weather, you just might catch a glimpse of the ruins at a recent airplane crash site.

#### The Rurimeria Hill

The 3rd highest point to one of the best hiking destinations in Kenya, to the beautiful Aberdares. It is **Rurimeria Hill** ` (3860M)` . Starting from **Geta Bush area** at the local guides and wildlife watchers station, we follow the electric fence and cross a stream with clear water and through a small of the rain forest as we start a steep ascent of 3.5km to the viewpoints

#### Vantage Rocks

The long walk to the peak through the moorland to the peak reveals exciting views of `Mt. Kipipiri `and the` Table Mountain of the Aberdares`. From the peak the `Le Satima Valley` invite. The trek is treacherous through the water bogs but the views are rewarding with vantage rocks to capture your imagination.

### The 7 Ponds

After summiting this point we add a twist to the trail and head to the magical `7 tarns spread across the vast splendid Northern Aberdares moorland`, we have our moment here connecting with self and nature before heading down to _Bel canto Camp_.

The trek takes `8-9 hrs` meaning those who wish to take part need to prepare physically and psychologically.

Take a deep breath and escape to the magical outdoors and adventure at **Table Mountain Gilgil**, a stand-alone hill located along the escarpment of the Great Rift valley in a small portion of forest called Maji Moto. The hill offers a panoramic view of the beautiful landscape of **Lake Elementaita, Sleeping Warrior, and the Aberdares**.

#### Lake Elementaita

The hiking trail starts at **Kikopey along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway**; the journey from Nairobi to Kikopey is about `2.5 hours`. The trail starts with a steep ascent; luckily, the serene view of the pristine Lake Elementaita is one of the bonus sceneries that make the commitment worth it.
The trail further takes a short descent through bushlands, across two river crossings, and up another brief steep ascent.

#### The Summit

The final gentle trek leads to the magnificent Table Mountain.
Although getting to the summit of Table Mountain is the most challenging part of the hike as it is extremely rocky, you will get the best panoramic view of the moorlands and vast ridges of the Aberdares at the top. As there are no trees on top of the plateau, you might want to take your snacks at the hot springs, which are just a brief descent away.

After a refreshing rest at the hot springs we start our descend.
